THE PROJECT
Not Quite is an interview-based photography project exploring a very common and well known yet sparsely represented human experience: the loud silence of swallowed words, the sore moments of shrinking and dimming, the steps not taken and the decisions postponed, and the larger cultural conditions that make all of this so hard to name.
Through intimate conversation and collaborative image-making, each photograph in this series translates a deeply personal inner experience into something tangible and recognizable, without needing much explanation.
This project is for the ones who know this feeling. This seemingly forever almost. And for everyone who has ever loved someone who carried it under their skin.
CALL FOR SUBJECTS
I'm looking for people who know what it feels like to hold back.
Maybe you carry things on your chest that don’t reach your lips. Maybe you make yourself smaller in rooms where your voice and your visibility are needed. Maybe you've been postponing something for so long it's become part of your identity. Maybe you're hiding something, from others or from yourself, and you simply don’t know how to reveal it.
I'd love to meet you.
The process starts with a conversation and ends with a photograph that makes your experience visible. You don't need to show your face if you don’t want to. You just need to recognize yourself in these words. If you do and would like to explore this topic with me, reach out.
BACKGROUND
Not Quite grew out of my own deep experience with holding back, and out of hundreds of conversations over the years with people who encounter it too, in many shapes and colors. As a Cultural Anthropologist (M.A.), Authentic Relating Facilitator, and Trauma-Informed Breathworker, I create conditions for people to access and express what usually stays hidden. I know how to hold a difficult conversation, and I know how to guide a process.
